The allergy evaluation is divided in several visits. The first visit is a consultation and review of the problem involved. If skin tests and screening for asthma are required, they are often started on the first visit.
Please do not take antihistamines 3 days before your visit, as they will interfere with allergy testing.
Skin tests are done by the prick and intradermal method and usually take 2 or 3 visits. At the last testing visit, results of all tests and treatment options are reviewed. Blood testing for screening allergies is available for certain individual cases.
The Pulmonary Function Test is performed to screen you for asthma. About 80% of Asthma is caused by allergies, and 30-60% of individuals who have nasal or ocular allergies can go on to develop asthma. The Pulmonary Function Test is performed by having you blow out as hard as you can on an average of three times. You may then be given a bronchodilator. The test will be repeated again after 15-20 minutes. |
